Hillary Clinton’s Mouth Is Her Own Reverend Wright

Gabriel Garnica

Now that we have seen Barack Obama take a major hit (perhaps one fatal for his ultimate chances of victory) with the Reverend Wright issue, we might rightly ask if Hillary Clinton has her own Reverend Wright ready to spew doom for her campaign as well. Some will argue that Hillary’s Wright is Bill, who some say has sometimes taken her campaign in distracting or damaging directions. In fact, many will say that Bill is Hillary’s Wright without even saying a word, turning many off in the light of his own presidential baggage.

Well, almost as if on cue, Hillary has managed to remind us who her Reverend Wright is.

The Reputation

The most enduring image of Hillary Clinton, earned over years of public statements, eyewitness revelations and relentless rumors, are of a ruthlessly ambitious power seeker who will do anything, including lying, exaggerating and crafting fiction, to gain power. Writers such as Barbara Olson,  R. Emmett Tyrell, Jr., Carl Limbacher and Peggy Noonan have given us a wealth of information and evidence regarding just how dangerous and ruthless Hillary Clinton can be.

While the tons of skeletons in the Clinton and Hillary closets are certainly crucial things to consider in this election cycle, they are not, per se, the Reverend Wright in Hillary’s campaign ready, willing and able to rain disaster upon her now fabled determination to step over, and on, anyone who gets in her way to the White House. This is greatly due to the MSM’s usual and, until Obama, complete protection of the Clinton reputation. In fact, we can safely assume that all the corruption, deception and unlawful activity in Hillary Clinton’s closet will not get in her way to Pennsylvania Avenue, thanks to an accomplice media. Certainly, if a conservative candidate had half the skeletons that Hillary has, said conservative would be toast.

At the end of the day, the MSM is a willing and ready enabler, allowing this woman to go on adding skeletons to her closet without a rest and without accountability or political repercussions.

The Culprit

While the MSM may do its best to shield Hillary Clinton from political fallout for her shady background and past, it is much more vulnerable in its efforts to protect her from her most dangerous nemesis, her Reverend Wright, if you will. That threat is Hillary Clinton’s own mouth.

Apart from the vile and disgusting things spewed by Wright, there is something interesting about watching a man so clueless in his hatred of America and white people as to sabotage his own friend and congregant’s effort to lead this country. There is something to the argument, advanced by conservatives (and even Hillary herself) that Obama should have walked out of Wright’s hate-filled rants. It is difficult to envision Obama trying to denounce someone he had no problem listening to for many years. On the other hand, it is easy to imagine Wright as Obama’s big-mouthed relative: spewing foolishness that Obama believes but has enough sense to keep a secret. Consider trying to shut up a drunken buddy at your wedding scandalizing everyone present and you get an idea of Obama’s predicament.

Having digested Barack’s troubles trying to silence the damage spewing from the mouth of his pastor, consider Hillary’s problems trying, for the umpteenth time, to do damage control for the damage of her own relentless mouth. I do not know which is worse: trying to stifle an associate’s mindless comments or trying to control one’s own destructive habit of absurd claims, lies and tall tales.

The Record

While few doubt that Hillary’s hunger for power knows no bounds, she possesses yet another habit every bit as relentless and, possibly, far more potentially damaging to her goals and legacy.  Tom Kuiper’s book titled I've Always Been a Yankees Fan: Hillary Clinton in Her Own Words  is an amazing portrait of a woman whose own mouth is her worst enemy. Be it vulgarity, callous arrogance, hypocrisy or sheer audacious deception, Hillary Clinton’s mouth may well be her greatest political liability.

We know of the ridiculous insinuations of military and international experience throughout her years in the senate and increasingly today. We are well aware of her changing accents and ability to, apparently, switch cultural roots on a whim, wearing a sombrero with mariachis one minute and speaking with a Southern accent when speaking to a Southern audience the next. Never one to be confined to conventional religious barriers, Hillary can claim to be Christian on Monday and Jewish on Wednesday.

Her claims of being a Yankees fan, despite evidence that she was a life-long Cubs fan, and of being named after climber Sir Edmund Hillary despite the fact that he was still an unknown at her birth prove that she is willing to lie about the most superficial and idiotic things, all in a pathetic attempt to paint herself as a cross between Eleanor Roosevelt, Joan of Arc and Mother Teresa.   While having a politician lie consistently is no revelation, never has there been one so prone to lying so often about so many things, large and small, in such a blatantly and pathetically obvious manner, all while denying each deception and distortion at each stumble.

The absurd exaggerations and outright lies described here and elsewhere all seem to point to one of Hillary’s most prominent and nasty habits. It seems that she will do and say almost anything to seem relevant, to appear proximate to where the action is, to be a player on some level in any arena even remotely important. It is ironic that Saturday Night Live has been accused of fawning adulation of Clinton, since one of its latest characters, played by Kristen Wiig, is a pathetic, lying woman who finds it necessary to trump everyone else’s achievements and experiences with her own plainly absurd and pathetic exaggerations and lies, all designed to make her seem somehow better and more important than everyone else (sound familiar?).

A vivid example of this sad trait was Hillary’s claim that her daughter Chelsea was jogging near Ground Zero on 9/11 when, in fact, Chelsea was in bed watching the horrible events of that morning on television. I guess Clinton will tell us that she misspoke or confused her daughter with someone else’s. It is this pattern of lies, large and small but all pathetically obvious and needless, that make Hillary Clinton more a tragic than an amusing figure. There are many traits that rational people look for in a leader, but being a tragic figure is not one of them, as evidenced by polls showing her to be the least trustworthy of the three candidates still fighting for the White House.

Recent Events and Fallout

Anyone doubting that Hillary’s mouth is her own worst enemy need only look at the recent verbal sandwich we have witnessed. First we were reminded of her exaggerated claims of being a vital power broker “intimately involved” in bringing peace to Northern Ireland even as others involved in her visits argue that she was at most an interested listener and observer.

Then we heard of the whole Bosnia sniper landing fiction with its resulting retreat and admission of inaccuracy.

Finally, as if all of this were not enough, we hear that Hillary’s claim to have helped pass the Family and Medical Leave Act has been torpedoed by William L. Clay Sr., the senior Democrat lawmaker who was the primary sponsor of the bill and helped push it through the House and Senate. Despite the fact that Clinton’s campaign Website says “As First Lady, she helped pass the Family and Medical Leave Act,” Ted Kennedy, Chris Dodd and Clay are generally given credit for getting this bill on the books. Furthermore, the 1993 Congressional Quarterly Almanac, which contains a detailed history of the bill, makes no mention of Hillary Clinton having played any role.  Maybe this failure to give her any credit is the result of a vast Left-wing conspiracy. Perhaps the Clintons have been “misquoted” or have “misspoken” again. Maybe this is just the next lie on Hillary Clinton’s pathetic list.  Clay has written that “If Hillary played a role in its passage, it was without my knowledge.”

Between the Northern Ireland, Bosnia and FMLA claims alone, we have a fiction sandwich which makes Hillary anything but a hero. In fact, the Bosnia flap alone has demonstrated a troubling, yet repetitive problem regarding Hillary’s attitude toward the truth.

Reminded that she had said it was the first time she had misspoken in 12 years, Clinton told reporters: "I was joking. Lighten up, guys." This response reveals a number of troubling issues in the Clinton mindset regarding truth. First, it reminds us that what Hillary says at any time is positioned in such a way as to be fact, fiction or fancy, depending on the response more than anything else. Clinton will claim she has found a cure for cancer and wait to see if people buy her claim or let it slide. If people buy her tall tale, she moves on, content to have planted another seed of fiction in her already illustrious volume of fables. If she is called on the fiction, however, she will be quick to claim having been misquoted, having misspoken or not recalling the event.

The second troubling aspect of Hillary’s response to this whole Bosnia flap is her flippant attitude toward “misspeaking”, which is Clintonese for “lying through your teeth to make yourself look far better than you are”. Finally, Hillary asks the press to “lighten up” as if whining that they should back off whenever she makes yet another absurd claim. In typical Clinton fashion, of course, she will attack any opponent who makes similar “misstatements.”  I guess lightening up only goes one way for Hillary Clinton.

In retracting her Bosnia claims, Hillary blamed a lack of sleep, being tired, and being confused due to so many trips and much more. These excuses might be understandable if her ridiculous claims and statements were few and isolated. Taken in totality, however, what emerges is a damaging pattern of lying, exaggerating and fabricating delusion to etch an illusion of qualification, expertise, experience and relevance that just is not there.

No Rational Explanation

Even if we cut her some slack for making too many trips or being tired, the sheer rational distance between Hillary’s original Bosnia account and videotaped reality leaves no doubt that Hillary has been caught in one of her most blatant lies to date. Hillary claimed numerous times that she was rushed from the plane, under a real threat of sniper fire, and barely had time to greet a small girl before being swept away to safety. In fact, the famous video shows Hillary calmly smiling and greeting the little girl with her daughter Chelsea by her side.

Hillary has argued that her error was due to confusion in view of so many trips to so many places, but did she ever land anywhere under threat of sniper fire such that she could confuse that incident with the Bosnia one? I personally have neither read nor heard of any such account. How can one confuse one incident with some other incident that never happened? Hillary has also claimed that she was tired and sleep deprived but, again, no amount of tiredness or lack of sleep can cause one to hallucinate or imagine some past event that never happened. Simply put, how tired do you have to be to claim you were under the threat of sniper fire when you never were?

Finally, Hillary has described her Bosnia slip as an error or misstatement – yet, again, such mistakes tend to be about single words or a few words and not entirely false, exaggerated and non-existent events and experiences.

Sinbad the entertainer was on that famous Bosnia trip, and recalls the most frightening part of the experience as not knowing when the next meal was coming. In the end, it is ironic that two of Hillary’s traveling companions on that Bosnia trip were Sinbad and Sheryl Crow, because Hillary’s recollection of the incident is a joke and, obviously, yet another shipment of Clinton crow.

Trying to change the topic from her own big mouth back to the big mouth of Obama’s pastor, Hillary now reverts to her usual habit of pointing fingers in feigned innocence while commenting that she would not accept Wright as her pastor given his diatribes. In view of a 1998 photograph showing Bill Clinton shaking hands with Reverend Wright at a White House event attended by Hillary, I guess Hillary had no problem breaking bread with the man she now repudiates.

Even some liberal journalists have recognized a destructive pattern of stretching the truth, stubbornly refusing to back down once caught in a lie, resenting any attempt to question the lie as personal attacks or bias, eventually retracting the lie as a misquote if possible or an error if necessary (not often) and then attempting to change topics as quickly as possible by attacking an opponent.

Come to think of it, even full-time sports columnist and part-time political observer Mike Lupica has suggested that Hillary would do better by shutting up than opening her creative and imaginative mouth.

When even your fellow liberals and famous sportswriters are telling you to shut up, you might want to consider the possibility that your own mouth is a built-in Reverend Wright liability all on its own.

Conclusion

The present Democrat nomination race is looking more absurd by the minute. It is not unlike two fighters beating each other’s brains out, with neither able to strike a decisive blow or take advantage of the other’s blunders. Obama has Hillary on the edge but cannot push her over.  Hillary rises from the dead with a few victories but just as quickly fails to continue the momentum.  Voters get a healthy dose of Obama’s pastor ranting like Hugo Chavez against America just in time to get a nice serving of Hillary making herself out to be Rambo in Bosnia, even as video shops her smiling and waving with her daughter.

You cannot make this up any more than you can shut up your drunken buddy at the wedding or, in the case of Hillary, shut your own mouth long enough to let your opponent sink in the polls.

In attacking Obama for his failure to repudiate Wright, Hillary commented that "You don't choose your family, but you choose what church you want to attend."

What Hillary needs to remember is that you also choose what lies to spread and, by the look of things, Hillary is much more qualified at spreading these than recalling airport landings.

Obama has his Wright and Hillary has her mouth, and this one looks like it will come down to which of these two will be the last one forced to answer for a stupid remark.
