Soon after taking over command of the U.S. Army’s II Corps in 1943, Gen. George S. Patton Jr. was touring the positions of the 1st Infantry Division in North Africa when he came upon a series of slit trenches which had been dug around the division’s command post.
When he inquired as to the reason for the trenches, division commander Maj. Gen. Terry Allen replied, “as protection against air attack.”
